Wearable Technology - Materials & Applications
Agenda

Tuesday January 15
3-210 Keller Hall
8:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Jointly sponsored by IPRIME's Biomaterials & Pharmaceutical Materials (BPM) and Coating Process Fundamentals (CPF) programs.

This workshop explores the new and rapidly evolving field of wearable technology.  Wearable technology encompasses electronic and mechanical devices integrated into fabrics, and flexible substrates that can be worn on the skin.  Applications include health monitoring and prosthetics, interactive wearable devices, and fashion.  One aim of this workshop is to identify materials and interfacial engineering challenges associated with the development of these new technologies.

Characterization Methods for Surfaces, Interfaces and Thin Films
Agenda

Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019
3-210 Keller Hall
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Sponsored by the University of Minnesota's Characterization Facility and IPRIME's Nanostructural Materials & Processes (NMP) program

This characterization workshop includes talks by technique experts (CharFac technical staff members and external speakers) presenting both basic principles of operation and applications pertinent to industry. Techniques will include elemental and chemical spectroscopy with mapping, X-ray and helium-ion scattering, scanning probe microscopy (both force and vacuum-tunneling based), instrumented nanoindentation and spectroscopic ellipsometry.

Characterization Facility Demonstrations
Schedule

Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019
12 Shepherd Labs (Entrance to CharFac)
8:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Sponsored by the University of Minnesota's Characterization Facility and IPRIME's Nanostructural Materials & Processes (NMP) program

Thursday demonstrations are for industrial attendees only; seats are limited. There is a fee for attending the demos: $225 for IPRIME members and $500 for non-members. Registrants may attend 2-4 demos contingent on the logistics of handling the various attendees' interests, time constraints, and capacity for bodies in the various labs.

Demonstrations offered:

  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, also known as ESCA)
  • Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS)
  • Ion beam analysis (IBA): Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE)
  • X-ray diffraction (thin film)
  • Confocal Raman microscopy
  • Spectroscopic ellipsometry
  • Ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (UHV STM)
  • Instrumented nanoindentation and mapping (hard materials)
  • Multifrequency atomic force microscopy (AFM) with viscoelastic and fast imaging (demo by Asylum Research)
  • Intermodulation atomic force microscopy (AFM) of nanostructured thin films

There is a two-step registration process if you choose to attend any of the demos. Be sure to register for the workshops first (REGISTER NOW) and then the demos on the separate registration page (CharFac Demos 2019). You will be notified by email which demos you will be able to attend.
